What are the benefits of juicing?
Fresh cold pressed juice rapidly supplies the body with health promoting enzymes, vitamins, minerals, pigments and phytonutrients. Enzymes are the workforce of the body. They are essential for digestion of food, producing energy, and are critical for most of the metabolic activities taking place in your body. By juicing you are giving your digestive system a break while flooding your cells with the healing benefits of the juice. Juicing helps to cleanse the body on a cellular level as well as creating a more alkaline body.

Benefits of Juicing:

* Boosts immune system
* Increases energy
* Improves endocrine functions
* Provides rest for the digestive organs
* Encourages physical rejuvenation
* Promotes healthy body weight
* Promotes normalized blood pressure
* Reverses signs of aging
* Promotes mental wellbeing
* Alleviates symptoms of PMS
* Promotes clear skin
* Improves allergies
* Supports fertility
* Combats viruses

How long should your cleanse last? It all depends on you. We offer a variety of options from a single day to an entire month.

What makes our juice the best?
Our hydraulic juice press uses seven tons of pressure to gently and completely extract all the nutritional goodness and flavor our fruits and veggies have to offer. This translates into easier and faster digestion and assimilation of vitamins, trace minerals, enzymes and other vital elements for the body. The Hydraulic Press method of juice extraction provides a minimum mixing of air with the juices which results in very slow oxidation or decomposition. This is why our juices maintain 3-5 times the vitamins and minerals than juices from other machines.

How do I get ready for my cleanse?
Two to three days before you begin your juice cleanse, it’s best to eliminate or greatly reduce consumption of:

Alcohol
Caffeine/coffee
Soft drinks
Red meat
Cured or processed meat (bacon, sausages etc.
Non-organic animal flesh
White flour products (pasta, bread, cookies, crackers)
Foods that contain hydrogenated fats and preservatives
Refined sugars and all products containing them
Dairy (milk, cheese)
Fried foods
All genetically modified foods
Canned foods

Eat these foods freely:
All vegetables especially dark leafy greens (except white potatoes), fruits, soaked nuts, seeds, sea vegetables, gluten free grains (millet, quinona, buckwheat, brown rice), filtered water, herb tea, organic chicken, organic eggs, superfoods (goji berries, cacao, maca, chia seeds, green powders).

Can I eat during my cleanse?
It’s up to you. We recommend a 100% juice cleanse, if possible because eating slows down the cleansing process. If you feel that you need to eat during your cleanse, choose organic fruits, vegetables or soaked nuts and seeds.

Is it healthy not to eat?
If you a healthy person without health issues, it’s perfectly fine to give your body a break from food. If you do have health concerns, please talk with your physician before starting a cleanse. First-time cleansers may experience some light-headedness and irritability on the first day. It can be tough to fight the urge to eat, but if you stick with it, you’ll soon feel light and energized.

Do I need to take additional supplements during my cleanse?
You don't need to but it won't hurt if you do. Our cleanses are chock full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients, so you don’t need any extra dietary supplements. It’s important to keep taking any doctor-prescribed medications during your cleanse. If you are juicing for more than three days, it is recommended that you take a B-12 complex since vegan diets don't supply B-12.

How long should my cleanse last?
It depends on what your body needs and your personal health goals.  Every body has its own history of diet, chemical exposure and stress levels.[Soft Break]
1 day cleanse is a great introduction to the idea of cleansing as well as a great way to maintain the benefits of a longer cleanse. Do this once a month, before a big date, or after a little too much indulging and you'll feel the difference.

3 day cleanse will eliminate toxins, bolster your immune system, boost energy, clear your skin and help you get glowing, stimulate weight loss, and address many basic gastro-intestinal imbalances.

5-to-7 day cleanse is recommended to address many common health concerns, if like many people you: have a high-stress lifestyle, eat fast/processed foods, smoke, drink, or take prescription/non-prescription drugs.

2-to-4 weeks: For chronic health concerns, inflammation, or lose a good amount of weight a longer program may be needed. We'll recommend a customized juice cleanse of  up to 2-weeks, followed by two more weeks with the addition of cleansing foods.

Are the UR cleanses gluten free?
Yes, our cleanse is 100% gluten-free and 100% vegan.

I'm allergic to nuts. Can I do the UR cleanse?
Yes. We can make your cleanse nut-free. However, since we use nuts in our kitchen, our cleanses are not recommended for people with severe nut allergies.

Can I create my own cleanse?
Yes. For $150 consultation fee, you can schedule an appointment to create a customized cleanse based on your bodies needs and your health goals. Call 415.383.3223.

Are Urban Remedy juices organic?
Yes, we only use organic ingredients. If a fruit or veggie is out of season or unavailable, we will substitute it.

What are phytonutrients?
Despite its high-tech name, "phytonutrient" (from the Greek phyton for "plant") simply means a "nutrient from a plant." Phytonutrients provide medicine for cell health by stimulating the release of protective enzymes or those that rebuild damaged cells. Some phytos inhibit cancer-producing substances, reducing their ability to damage cells. When the repair squad can stay ahead of the damage, degenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and arthritis, can't get started. Phytos keep cancer and cardiovascular disease in check. The best known phytos are carotenoids, flavonoids, and isoflavones. Carotenoids include yellow, orange, and red pigment in fruits and vegetables. Dark, green, leafy vegetables are rich in the carotenoid, beta carotene, but the usual yellow color is masked by the chloraphyll, the green pigment in the vegetables. Flavonoids are reddish pigments, found in red grape skins and citrus fruits.

Coconut

My friend Nicole requested I blog on the health benefits of coconut oil. So Nic this one's for you...

The main health promoting aspects of coconut lie in the fat of the whole coconut and in the oil. Lauric acid which is the major fatty acid in coconut has antiviral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal functions. It also contais capric acid which has antimicrobial properties.

Recently published research has shown that adding coconut fat to the diet leads to a normalization of body lipids, protects the liver against alcohol damage, and imporoves the immune system's anti-inflammatory response, as well as aiding in weight loss.

Coconut oil got a bad rap from the soybean oil industry and giants like the Food and Drug Administration and the American Diabetes Association who maintain that saturated fats are bad. These companies have links to the polyunsaturated fats industry, another example of money being the driving force behind health information. But that is a whole other blog.

One study was done where women ate the same diet and half were supplemented with soybean oil and the other half with coconut oil. Women taking coconut oil had an improved cholesterol profile. Those taking soybean oil, however, did not receive the same benefits. In fact, the soybean oil group had higher total cholesterol, higher LDL cholesterol. Only the group taking the coconut oil saw a significant reduction in their waist circumference. In the words of the authors: "It appears that dietetic supplementation with coconut oil does not cause dyslipidemia and seems to promote a reduction in abdominal obesity." For more of the health benefits of coconut you can go to http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/.

As with all oils steer clear of the refined stuff and stick with organic virgin coconut oil. The less processed the better. Coconut oil is great for high heat cooking. Most oils oxidize when heated creating free radicals in the body which accelerates aging which most of us are trying to slow down. So it’s great for stir-frys and sauteeing. You can substitute it in baking and in recipes that call for butter, lard or any other high-saturated fats. It has a similar consistency to butter so it can be used as a spread for toast or vegetables. It makes an excellent addition to a smoothie. Polyunsaturated fats like corn, soy, safflower, sunflower and canola, are the worst oils to use in cooking. These omega-6 oils are highly susceptible to heat damage because of all the double bonds they have. Olive oil is great to use in salad dressings. For cooking stick with coconut oil.

Coconut water from the young coconuts is equally as impressive as the oil. Coconut water has five electrolytes, more than most sports drinks, including fifteen times the potassium (and more potassium than a banana). It has a fraction of the calories of sports drinks, no added sugars and has protein, phosphorus, calcium, Vitamin C and riboflavin. It is a natural isotonic drink used to rehydrate the body and is similar to human plasma (blood). Other health benefits of the water include: naturally boosts the immune system, improves intestinal health, increases metabolism & weight loss, balances body PH, detoxifies & fights viruses, helps fatigue, prevents hypertension, controls diabetes, aids in circulation, treats kidney stones, eases stomach pain & vomiting .

There are many ways to enjoy coconut. Dairy free coconut ice cream is delicious http://www.coconutbliss.com/. You can buy young green coconuts at asian markets, chop off the top drink the electrolyte filled coconut water and then scoop out the soft young coconut meat and it it raw..this is my favorite. You can add dried coconut to cereals, cookies, or trail mix.

Flush Fat Cells with H2O?

Having spent my teen years in a beach town in Southern California, I was acutely aware of how to keep my growing body from growing too much. Along with the three Rs, most of the girls in my class were also fluent in a myriad of weight-loss tricks. The Grapefruit Diet, The Pineapple Diet, Scarsdale, etc. etc. One rumor that was whispered through the ranks was that simply drinking water would flush the fat cells from the body.

Fast forward 20-ish years and I'm a freelance writer researching the topic, for an article for Self Magazine...

Here's the gist of the article.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the most effective exercise you needed to do to burn fat was lift, gulp and swallow? According to Donald S. Robertson, M.D., founder and medical director of Southwest Bariatric Nutrition Center in Scottsdale, Arizona –it is. Over the last 30 years, Dr. Roberston has helped thousands of people loose thousands of pounds at his weight loss center touting water as the only viable magic potion. “Water not only suppress the appetite, prevents bloating and it is essential for the body to metabolize fat,” he explains. In fact, Dr. Robertson insists that if you don't drink enough water it may cause fat cells to multiply because of the liver's inability to metabolize lipids. Metabolically speaking, he continues, “If a person does not drink enough water, the liver has to slow down and eventually stop it’s fat burning duties to help the kidney flush toxins [including fat cells] from the body.”

“Yes, water is essential to health, No! – it is not a weight-loss-elixir” counters Susan Kleiner, PhD, R.D and author of a series of book geared towards nutrition and human performance including, Power Eating: A Nutritional Guideline for High Performance Athletes, published by Human Kinetics. “This type of sensationalism is misleading and can lead to dieting frustration,” explains Dr. Kleiner who penned an article for the Journal of American Dietetic Association. Ironically, her article concluded that most people suffer from mild dehydration and would benefit from drinking more water. However, she does not support the idea that simply drinking more water will get you into that teensy weeny bikini by summer.

Bottom Line:
“Drinking water is essential whether you are trying to loose weight or maintain a healthy body,” states Kleiner, “however, there is no conclusive evidence supporting the concept of water intake corresponding with the number of fat cells in the body.” In other words, ‘lift, gulp, swallow’ needs to be accompanied with a few huffs and puffs (cardio) to achieve successful weight loss results.

Another article on the topic written in 2004 by Webmd, with a title leaning towards water as a magic pill, (in this case a metabolism revv-er), demonstrates, the research is inconclusive. The author sites a study in Germany. www.webmd.com/diet/news/20040105/drinking-water-may-speed-weight-loss

Almond milk live raw & delicious

For those of you who love a cold glass of milk with a sweet treat or a bowl of cereal try almond milk instead of cow or soy milk. Dairy & soy are both highly allergenic and many find them difficult to digest. Soaking the almonds activates the enzymes that otherwise lay dormant, these ezymes help with digestion.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, almonds are considered anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and are also used as a tonic. Also known as brain and bone food, probably due to their high calcium content. They help with alkalinizing the blood and relieve qi stagnation in the liver.
In Ayurvedic medicine almonds are used to strengthen ojas and are said to nurture self control and calmness of the mind and nerves.

1 cup almonds

water

stevia or agave optional

pinch salt

In a glass bowl cover almonds with filtered water and soak overnight around 12 hours.
Rinse almonds
Put almonds in blender add 4-5 cups filtered water, salt, and a little sweetener if you like.
Blend on high until smooth.
You can use the almond milk at this point but some prefer to pour milk through a nut milk bag or cheese cloth. I actually prefer it straight out of the blender. You can play with the amount of water if you like it a little thicker use less water, thinner use more.

Lycopene

Chance are you’ve heard about the antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties of Lycopene – and you know that it’s better absorbed by the body along with a fat such as avocado or olive oil.

What is it? Lycopene is a fat-soluble (needs fats to be absorbed by the body) pigment found in plants. For these plants it protects against the toxic effects of oxygen and light, for humans lycopene in our diet works as a powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralize harmful free radicals.

What makes lycopene so desirable, is its presence in the diet has been repeatedly studied on humans with positive results to be protective against a growing list of cancers. The evidence for a benefit was strongest for cancers of the prostate, lung, and stomach. Data were also suggestive of a benefit for cancers of the pancreas, colon and rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast, and cervix. Lycopene has also been linked to prevention of heart disease, age-related illnesses such as mascular degeneration, osteoporosis, as well as allergy symptoms.

• store these fruits at room temperature until cutting for maximum lycopene and beta-carotene. Once you cut it up, store in a glass container in your refrigerator for up to nine days with minimal nutrient loss.

Studies:

The carotenoid lycopene from tomato may interfere with levels of a hormone associated with an increase in the risk of colorectal cancer, suggests a Dutch study.

Controversial study: answered by Dr. Andrew Weil

What do you think of the study showing that eating tomatoes offers no protection against prostate cancer and that, in fact, consumption of large amounts of beta-carotene may increase the incidence of aggressive prostate cancer?

www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/259518

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that in patients with colorectal adenomas, a type of polyp that is the precursor for most colorectal cancers, blood levels of lycopene were 35 percent lower compared to study subjects with no polyps.

Growing tomatoes in diluted seawater significantly increased the levels of antioxidant vitamins C and E, says new research from Italy.

Regular consumption of both green tea and foods rich in lycopene resulted in a synergistic protective effect, stronger than the protection afforded by either, the researchers also noted.

Hey Guys - Eat Watermelon!

Inspired by Neka’s recent article on summer foods, in the EVO spa newsletter and her recipe for watermelon salad (posted below) I did a bit more investigation as to why this delicious and satisfying fruit is gaining attention as a nutritional superstar.

First of all, because of its high water content, and low calories (50 calories per cup) watermelon gets high marks for nutrient/ calorie ratio. For such a watery snack it has a surprising high B vitamins and antioxidant content.

Also pardon the pun, but what’s up with the watermelon // Viagra comparisons? Here’s the science behind these claims. Watermelon has a strong dose of the amino acid citrulline, which converts to the amino acid arginine when consumed. Arginine has beneficial effects on the heart and circulatory system, as well as the immune system. It boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, which is what Viagra does, plus a few potentially unfortunate side effects. In the words of the much quoted researcher and director of Texas A&M's Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center, Bhimu Patil, “Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra,” Patil said, “but it’s a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects.”

Coupled with another study by Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, watermelon along with green tea can greatly reduce the risk of prostate cancer. All in all, guys – there are many reasons to add a big healthy watermelon to your cart, next time you’re at the grocery store.
